How Much Does a Metal Building Cost?
Updated October 2026 · By the Omega Metal Buildings team
The honest answer: it depends on where you live and what you need. Here's exactly what drives the price, so your quote makes sense and nothing surprises you.
The short answer
The price of a metal building is set by eight things: the size of the building, current steel prices, the wind and snow rating your address requires, roof style, framing and panel gauge, doors, windows and options, your foundation, and delivery and installation conditions. Two buildings that look identical can be priced very differently if one is going to the Gulf Coast or the mountains and the other isn't. That's why Omega quotes every building for your ZIP code instead of listing one price for everyone.
Get my price for my ZIPWhy Omega Doesn't Post Prices Online
You've probably seen websites with a low "starting at" price, only to get a much higher quote later. We don't do that.
Three reasons:
- Steel prices move. The cost of steel can change month to month, so a price posted today can be out of date by the time you order.
- Your address changes the building. A building rated for high wind or heavy snow uses heavier framing, closer truss spacing and more anchors than the same size building in a mild area. Same size, different building, different price.
- Every building is custom. Doors, windows, colors, insulation and site conditions all add up differently for each order.
So instead of a number that probably won't match your quote, we give you a real price for your building at your address, usually by 9am the next business day.
What Determines the Cost of a Metal Building
- 1
Size
Width, length and height drive the amount of steel in the building, so size is the biggest single factor. Width usually adds cost faster than length, because wider buildings need larger trusses. Taller side walls add steel and often require more bracing.
Cost impact: High
- 2
Steel market prices
Metal buildings are mostly steel, so their prices follow the steel market. When steel costs rise, building prices rise with them. This is the main reason prices you saw a few months ago may not match a quote today.
Cost impact: High, and changes over time
- 3
Wind and snow rating
Every address has a required design wind speed and snow load. Higher ratings mean closer truss spacing, heavier framing, extra bracing and more anchors. Coastal, mountain and high-plains sites often need significantly more steel than the same size building elsewhere.
Look up your loads →Cost impact: Low to high, depending on your location
- 4
Roof style
Regular roofs cost the least, boxed eave roofs cost a bit more, and vertical roofs cost the most because they use extra framing and panels run top to bottom. Vertical roofs are also the strongest and shed snow and rain best, which is why we recommend them for most enclosed buildings.
Cost impact: Medium
- 5
Framing and panel gauge
14-gauge framing is standard; 12-gauge framing is heavier and stronger. 29-gauge panels are standard; 26-gauge panels are thicker and more dent-resistant. Upgrades add cost but can be required for higher wind and snow ratings or wider spans.
Cost impact: Medium
- 6
Sides, doors, windows and options
A fully enclosed garage costs more than an open carport of the same size. Roll-up doors, walk-in doors, windows, frame-outs, insulation, vents, wainscot and two-tone colors each add to the price.
Cost impact: Medium to high, depending on options
- 7
Foundation
Your foundation is usually a separate cost from the building. Concrete slabs cost the most and are best for enclosed buildings; gravel pads and ground installations cost less and work for many carports and barns.
Compare foundation options →Cost impact: Medium to high (separate from the building)
- 8
Delivery, installation and site conditions
Delivery and installation are included on most orders when the site is level and accessible. Uneven ground, long carries, tight access or remote locations can add cost. Permit fees are set by your local building department.
Cost impact: Low to medium
How Your Choices Affect the Price
No dollar amounts here, just how each choice compares. Use this to decide where to spend and where to save.
| Choice | Lower cost | Higher cost |
|---|---|---|
| Building type | Open carport | Fully enclosed garage |
| Roof style | Regular | Vertical |
| Framing | 14-gauge | 12-gauge |
| Panels | 29-gauge | 26-gauge |
| Wind and snow rating | Standard rating | High wind or heavy snow rating |
| Doors | Fewer, standard doors | Multiple large roll-up doors |
| Insulation | None | Full insulation |
| Foundation | Ground or gravel | Concrete slab |
| Site | Level, easy access | Uneven, tight or remote |
Smart Ways to Lower Your Cost
- Size it right. Measure what you'll store and plan sensibly. Don't pay for space you won't use, but don't buy too small and need a second building.
- Choose a carport or partial enclosure if you don't need a fully enclosed building.
- Spend on the roof, save on options. A vertical roof and the right wind and snow rating protect your investment. Fancy trim and extra windows can wait.
- Plan a frame-out for a door or window you may add later.
- Prepare your own site if you're able, with a level, well-drained pad.
- Use financing or rent-to-own to spread payments over time. See financing options →
- Never skip the rating your county requires. It's the one thing you can't cut. An under-rated building can fail inspection or fail in a storm.

Metal Building Cost FAQs
Why don't you list prices on your website?
Steel prices change often, and your local wind and snow requirements change how your building is engineered. A posted price usually wouldn't match your real quote, so we price every building for your address instead.
Why did my quote differ from another company's price?
Check that both quotes have the same size, roof style, framing and panel gauge, doors and options, and especially the same wind and snow rating. Lower quotes are often for buildings that aren't rated for your area.
Why does my location change the price?
Buildings in high-wind or heavy-snow areas need stronger framing, closer truss spacing and more anchors. Delivery distance and site access can also affect cost.
Does the price include delivery and installation?
Delivery and installation are included on most orders when your site is level and accessible. Your quote will show exactly what's included.
Is the foundation included?
Usually not. The foundation is typically a separate cost. Your specialist can explain what your building needs and how to plan for it.
How long is a quote good for?
Because steel prices change, quotes are valid for a limited time. Your quote will show its expiration date.
Can I finance my building?
Yes. Omega offers financing and rent-to-own options, with no credit check on rent-to-own.
